If you work out regularly, vitamin supplements with an antioxidant formula may be more important than ever

So in the sport nutrition world, what are "vitamin supplements with an antioxidant formula"?

Basically, the vitamin supplements C, E, and beta-carotene are called antioxidants because they protect your body against reactive molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are released in the body as part of normal physical activity so don't panic. However, the amount of free radicals significantly increases during exercise. If you exercise a lot, there are more free radicals zipping around in your system damaging cells, tissues, organs, and your immune system. From a sport nutrition point of view, controlling and minimizing free radicals during and after exercise is a priority.

Antioxidant vitamin supplements (C, E, beta-carotene, and the mineral selenium) clean up the free radicals in your body and prevent new ones from forming. And, as always, the BEST source of vitamins and minerals in your diet is food. But for intense strength trainers, endurance athletes and cross trainers following a sport nutrition program, vitamin supplements such as a good multivitamin containing those hardworking antioxidant vitamins, is not a bad idea.

For example, look for multivitamin supplements with:

  • 10,000 to 20,000 IU (international units) of beta-carotene
  • 100 to 400 IU of vitamin E
  • 200 to 300 milligrams of vitamin C
  • Up to 50 micrograms of selenium
