Fad diets low in carbs and
high in high protein foods can be risky
High protein foods
are essential to many fad diets. The reasoning behind
it makes sense. Protein is the basic building block of
our muscles and bodies and it supplies our bodies with
essential amino acids that we need to work and grow.
Typically, high protein foods are low in carbohydrates
and saturated fats. Including more high protein foods
in your diet will definitely benefit your body and
health; however, these fad diets encourage drastically
restricting your diet, which could be dangerous to
your long-term health.
Fad diets that increase your intake of high protein
foods typically limit your intake of carbohydrates. By
doing this, nutrient rich foods like fruits,
vegetables and grains are cut out of your diet.
However, these foods provide your body with vitamins
and nutrients that are essential to your body’s growth
and maintenance.
These fad diets are effective if you are simply
looking to lose weight fast but the long term effects
are risky. Eventually your body will crave foods rich
in carbohydrates. You will almost certainly end up
binging on these foods at some point. Diets that are
low in carbohydrates and high in high protein foods
also promote the intake of large amounts of
cholesterol and trans fats, which increase your risk
of heart disease. Osteoporosis and kidney problems are
also typical health risks associated with low carb
diets.
It’s true that protein is a very important part of any
diet. Our bodies need it to function and grow.
However, there are many vitamins and minerals your
body needs that you can’t get from high protein foods.
The key to eating healthy and losing weight is not to
get caught up in fad diets, but to get all the
vitamins and nutrients you need by eating in
moderation from all food category.
